Calendar of Events

The PTA traditionally proposes and assists in organising (along with all class representatives) a series of exciting, fun-filled activities for the school – and the 2009-10 school year is no exception! Forthcoming events include a movie night, school dance, an Easter-Egg hunt, non-uniform days and many, many more! Please check this page for regular updates on forthcoming events.

Forthcoming Events

Happy New Year! The PTA have many exciting events planned for 2010 – and of course the much anticipated school bazaar is only a few months away!

January PTA Meeting – 19 January 2010
In place of the monthly PTA meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, 19 January a special seminar will be held.

Date: Tuesday, 19 January 2010
Time: 1.30pm – 3.00pm
Venue: School Cafeteria

Guest Speaker: Dr. Tim Greer, Associate Professor, School of Languages and Communication,
Kobe University

Bilingual children can and do speak two or more languages, so it should come as no surprise that they sometimes use both of their languages in the same conversation. However this can also be a matter of concern for their parents, many of whom were raised with only one language.

This seminar will focus on some of the socio-interactional functions of code-switching and demonstrate how bilingual people can use it to express certain aspects of their identities. The speaker will invite parents to consider when and whether bilingual interaction is appropriate, and what (if any) effect it has on the acquisition of two or more languages. Discussion will also focus on whether families should aim for a complete mastery of both languages—or set more achievable goals, such as high levels of competency in one of the languages and partial proficiency in the other. We anticipate the seminar will also be of interest to families where only one language is used, since all children in the St. Michael’s community are exposed to a variety of languages on a daily basis. Following the presentation by Dr. Greer, parents are invited to raise questions.

School Dance – Friday, 22 January 2010

The PTA and Year 5 class representatives are delighted to present the 2010 SMIS School Dance. The school hall will be transformed into a disco, complete with disco balls and lighting, ready for two hours of non-stop move-busting, music-pumping fun! In addition to free-style dancing, there will be group dancing sessions with a dance instructor on-hand to teach the children moves such as the Macarena, bus stop, line dancing and many more. And when it all becomes too tiring there will be rest-areas where the children can relax with their friends. This promises to be an evening to remember! So choose your outfit, dust off your dancing shoes, and get ready to boogie the early evening away! The School Dance is a MUST on your social calendar for January!

Time: 4.00pm to 6.00pm
Venue: School Hall
Dress Code: Party Wear
Food & Refreshments: Party finger-food (e.g. onigiris, sandwiches, mini pizzas, hotdogs etc) and refreshments will be provided for all children

Super Hero Day - 22 October 2009
The Year 1 class representatives utilised many super hero powers to create an action-packed, fun-filled games arena on the roof for all the children on Super Hero day. The children created many imaginative new Super Heroes and designed and wore many elaborate costumes for the day – a big congratulations to everyone who took part and to those children in each year who won a prize!
