Learning about the Sustainable Development Goals helps our learners grow as thoughtful global citizens. Even in the early years of primary school, children learn that their choices matter and that small actions can help care for the planet.
Recently, Year 1 have been learning that plastic can be useful, but that single use plastic can harm our oceans and sea animals. Through stories, videos and simple investigations, they explored how plastic travels, what happens when it is thrown away and why it is so dangerous for sea creatures. To turn their learning into action, the children designed fabric bags to spread the word about plastic pollution. They chose clear pictures and short messages to encourage people to use fewer plastic bags.
Year 1 then visited other classes to share their message. They showed their bag designs, explained what they had learned about plastic in the oceans and encouraged older pupils to think about their own everyday choices. Speaking to other classes gave them a strong sense of purpose and pride.
This project is a clear example of great learning in action. Year 1 deepened their understanding of an important global issue, practised communication skills and experienced what it means to make a positive difference. Step by step, experiences like this help our young learners grow into informed, responsible global citizens.
