After School Clubs: Learning Beyond the Classroom

Learning at St. Michael’s does not end when the school day finishes. Our after school clubs give children opportunities to explore new interests, develop their talents and enjoy learning alongside friends from across the school. This term’s programme offers a broad range of activities, including chess, coding, Minecraft, football, basketball, origami, Lego, Japanese, crafts, board games and storytelling. The variety reflects our commitment to developing the whole child and recognising that valuable learning happens in many different ways.

Clubs complement academic learning by encouraging children to think creatively, solve problems and apply skills in new contexts. Chess and coding develop strategic thinking and problem solving. Storytelling supports communication and imagination, while sports encourage physical development, teamwork and perseverance. Creative activities provide opportunities for concentration, self expression and learning through making. Just as importantly, clubs support personal development. Children mix with different age groups, build new friendships, try something unfamiliar and develop confidence and independence. These experiences help strengthen many of the personal skills we value across our curriculum, including communication, cooperation, resilience and adaptability.

Our staff also bring their own interests and expertise to the programme, allowing children to see another side of the adults they learn with each day and strengthening relationships across our school community. After school clubs are another way we live our mission: creating opportunities for children to grow, work and learn together, both inside and beyond the classroom.
