Celebrating 37 years of partnership

Last week our Year 4 class made their annual visit to Joto Elementary School in Sasayama. Always an event that our students look forward to, this year felt extra special as it marked the 37th anniversary of this unique partnership.

The link between the two schools began in 1989, after a chance meeting at a summer camp. Since then, the exchanges have continued every year, with St Michael’s welcoming a class from Joto Elementary in December and our pupils making the return visit in January or February, weather permitting.

At the heart of this partnership is a shared commitment to cultural understanding and friendship. During each visit, pupils take part in lessons and activities together, learn about one another’s school life and practise communicating across cultures. The real highlight, however, is always the simple joy on the children’s faces as they make new friends, share their learning and discover how much they have in common.

Long term partnerships like this enrich our curriculum and deepen our links with the wider community. As we celebrate 37 years of connection with Joto Elementary, we also look ahead to future visits and to many more opportunities for our pupils to grow as open minded, confident learners.
