Service Learning

Service learning is a planned blend of classroom learning and community action. It gives children real ways to use their knowledge to meet real needs. It helps to build empathy, responsibility and a habit of contribution. Service learning helps our children understand different perspectives, act with integrity and see themselves as part of a wider world.

This week our Student Leadership Council (SLC) is a clear example. Before and after school they are in the playground selling poppies ahead of Friday’s Service of Remembrance. They have set a rota, prepared materials, explained the purpose of the appeal and encouraged all members of our community to donate to this very worthy cause. The SLC are practising collaboration, communication and critical thinking in an authentic context that matters to our community.

The learning is academic, personal and international. Children connect history and literacy with remembrance, symbolism and gratitude. They demonstrate initiative, responsibility, respect and compassion. They also learn that small actions can lead to meaningful impact. Service learning also develops global citizens. It encourages learners to notice issues beyond themselves, listen well, plan carefully and persevere. It builds a cultural understanding and respect. It invites reflection on values and choices. Most of all, it grows confidence that every child can make a difference.

Thank you to our Student Leadership Council for leading the poppy appeal this week, and to families for your generous support. Together we continue to grow, work and learn as a community that serves.
