From Shields to Stories Making History Meaningful

Always a popular subject, as this photograph from the 1970’s demonstrates, History comes alive in our classrooms. Rather than simply memorising dates and facts, children explore big questions, investigate sources and make meaningful connections between past and present. This approach helps them build a richer understanding of how people lived, thought and made decisions in different times and places.

Through carefully planned IPC themes, pupils examine artefacts, images and stories, then use what they discover to form and test their ideas. They learn to ask thoughtful questions, consider different viewpoints and use evidence to explain their thinking. In the process they develop important skills in enquiry, critical thinking and communication that support learning far beyond the history curriculum.

By engaging with history in this active way, our learners begin to see themselves as part of a much bigger story. They recognise that the choices people made in the past still shape the world around them, and that their own choices will influence the future.
