The Early Years at St Michael’s provide the foundation for future learning. These first experiences of school shape how children see themselves as learners and how they engage with the world around them. Our approach focuses on play, safety, belonging and inclusion to ensure every child makes a confident and positive start.
Play is central to learning in the Early Years. Through play, children explore ideas, develop language, build relationships and begin to understand the world. Carefully planned activities support early skills in literacy, numeracy and problem solving, while keeping learning meaningful and engaging.
A strong sense of safety is essential. Clear routines, consistent expectations and warm relationships help children feel secure. When children feel safe, they are more willing to take risks, try new things and develop independence in their learning. Belonging is equally important. We take time to know each child as an individual, valuing their interests, background and voice. Children are encouraged to share, collaborate and feel proud of their place within the class and the wider school community. Inclusion ensures that every child can succeed. We support a wide range of needs and language backgrounds, adapting learning so all children can access and enjoy their experiences. Strong communication with families helps us build a shared understanding of each child’s development.
By focusing on these key areas, the Early Years lay the groundwork for confident, capable learners who are ready to grow, work and learn together.
